How a secret faith survived centuries of Inquisition and forced conversion
In short: From the streets of medieval Spain to the frontiers of Mexico, millions lived double lives. Known as crypto-Jews, these practitioners publicly embraced Catholicism while privately guarding Jewish rituals, using everything from hidden sausages to forged documents to evade the deadly scrutiny of the Inquisition.
Crypto-Judaism describes the practice of secretly adhering to Jewish traditions while outwardly professing another faith. This phenomenon was most prominent among the 'Conversos'—Spanish and Portuguese Jews who converted to Christianity following the 1391 massacres and the 1492 expulsion from Spain. To avoid the severe penalties of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions, many families maintained their identity through domestic rituals, such as preparing 'Alheira'—a poultry-based sausage designed to mimic pork and mask the avoidance of it.
The struggle for survival often required elaborate deception. In the Spanish colonies of the Americas, migrants used forged 'limpieza de sangre' (purity of blood) documents to bypass laws that barred 'New Christians' from settling. Some sought refuge in the far reaches of the Spanish Empire, such as the province of Nuevo León. There, the governor Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva, a Portuguese New Christian, utilized a royal charter exemption to settle the frontier with laborers who were often crypto-Jews.
The reach of these secret communities was global. In India, the Portuguese Empire provided a corridor for crypto-Jews to reach established Jewish settlements on the western coast, away from the immediate reach of the Inquisition. Meanwhile, in the Americas, these traditions often merged with local customs, creating a syncretic religious landscape. Some communities, like the 'Belmonte Jews' in Portugal, managed to maintain their unique Sephardic traditions in total secrecy for centuries, only being discovered by the modern world in the 20th century.
