From Pageant Queen to Hollywood Lead: The Tumultuous Career of Crystle Stewart
In short: Crystle Stewart rose to prominence as Miss USA 2008 before transitioning into a successful acting career. Yet, her tenure as the first African American leader of the Miss USA organization ended in controversy, marked by allegations of rigging and harassment that ultimately led to her resignation in 2023.
Born in 1981, Crystle Stewart navigated a long path to success in the pageant circuit. Before winning Miss Texas USA in 2007, she competed in the state pageant five times, frequently placing as a runner-up. Her persistence paid off when she secured the Miss USA title in 2008. During the Miss Universe competition that same year, she became notable for a public stumble during the evening gown event, an incident that mirrored the experience of her predecessor, Rachel Smith. Despite this, Stewart finished eighth overall.
Following her reign, Stewart pivoted toward entertainment, building a career as an actress. She is perhaps best known for her six-season role as Leslie Morris-Jetson in the television series For Better or Worse, which began in 2011. Her professional portfolio includes various Tyler Perry productions, such as the 2018 film Acrimony and the 2012 movie Good Deeds. By 2024, she had secured a lead role in the Netflix drama Beauty in Black, marking a significant evolution from her early days as a model and motivational speaker.
In 2020, Stewart made history as the first African American woman to oversee the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants as their national director. However, this leadership role was short-lived. By October 2022, she and her company, Miss Brand Corporation, faced suspension following serious accusations from contestants regarding the integrity of pageant results and reports of sexual harassment. Although she maintained her position for a time, she officially vacated the role in August 2023. Her personal life also saw a major transition during this period, as she finalized a divorce from her husband, Max Sebrechts, in 2024.
