How one Connecticut metalcore band rose above a saturated musical scene
In short: In a genre where new bands seem to emerge around every corner, Currents has managed to stand out. Formed in 2011, this American metalcore outfit has navigated constant lineup shifts to become a distinctive force in the progressive metalcore landscape.
Established in 2011 within Newtown, Connecticut, by ex-drummer Jeff Brown, Currents has changed considerably. By 2018, the band reached a turning point where no original members remained. Today, the lineup features singer Brian Wille, guitarists Ryan Castaldi and Chris Wiseman, bassist Christian Pulgarin, and drummer Matt Young. The group's early output included the independent EPs Victimized and Life // Lost. Following these initial releases, they secured a deal with SharpTone Records.
Their musical identity is defined by a blend of metalcore and progressive metalcore, incorporating heavy riffs, breakdowns, and melodic rhythms. They are also noted for their use of djent guitars. While some critics, such as Morten Wenzek of Metal Hammer Germany, have noted their ability to emulate European djent progenitors like Novelts and Loathe, the band has carved out a specific niche. This distinction was highlighted by critic Kris Pugh of Distorted Sound Magazine, who noted that Currents has made many other emerging modern metalcore bands feel irrelevant. The band's sound is heavily influenced by various acts, including Thrice and Northlane. They also draw inspiration from groups like Circa Survive and the Ghost Inside.
Since signing with the US independent label SharpTone Records in March 2017, the band has maintained a prolific release schedule. Their discography includes the debut album The Place I Feel Safest (2017), the second album The Way it Ends (2020), and the third album The Death We Seek (2023). Their vocal style is characterized by Brian Wille's ability to alternate between clear and screaming vocals, a hallmark of the genre's technical demands. Their recent activity includes the 2022 single Vengeance and the 2023 release Remember Me. Additionally, they are scheduled to co-headline the Silence Follows Tour alongside ERRA.
