How a British ballroom franchise conquered the Australian television ratings landscape
In short: From its 2004 debut to its recent resurgence, this ballroom competition has navigated network cancellations, host changes, and massive viewership peaks. Discover how a simple dance-off format became a national ratings powerhouse, once attracting two million viewers every single week.
The Australian iteration of Dancing with the Stars, part of the BBC Worldwide franchise, has undergone several distinct eras. Originally airing on the Seven Network from 2004 to 2015, the show achieved significant popularity, peaking with an average of approximately 2 million weekly viewers, making it the number one program of the day. Despite a period of cancellation announced in 2016, the series saw a revival on Network 10 between 2019 and 2020, hosted by Grant Denyer and Amanda Keller.
The production's mechanics and presentation have shifted alongside its network moves. While early seasons were broadcast live from Melbourne studios, the Network 10 era utilized Fox Studios Australia in Sydney and Docklands Studios in Melbourne. Interestingly, the show's visual identity evolved too; the first seven seasons utilized a logo similar to the British version, *Strictly Come Dancing*, whereas later seasons adopted a style closer to the American version.
The judging panel and hosting lineup have been notably volatile. Over the years, the panel has seen regulars like Todd McKenney and Helen Richey, as well as international figures like Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood. Even the voting process changed during Seven's second revival in 2021; unlike the traditional televoting used in previous iterations, the newer pre-recorded seasons relied on voting from the studio audience. This era also saw a transition in leadership, with veterinarian Chris Brown joining Sonia Kruger as a host following the departure of Daryl Somers.
