The youngest Army Secretary in history navigated a turbulent tenure defined by high-stakes diplomacy.
In short: Daniel P. Driscoll rose from a cavalry scout to become the youngest United States secretary of the Army. His brief, intense tenure saw him spearheading military modernization, negotiating peace in Ukraine, and navigating a bitter internal conflict with the Secretary of Defense that ultimately led to his resignation in 2026.
Born in 1986 in Boone, North Carolina, Daniel P. Driscoll followed a path through the military and law before entering the highest levels of government. After serving as a cavalry scout in Iraq with the 10th Mountain Division, he earned a law degree from Yale. His political career began with an unsuccessful 2020 congressional bid, but he returned to national prominence in 2024 when President-elect Donald Trump nominated him to lead the Department of the Army.
Confirmed in February 2025, Driscoll became the youngest person ever to hold the office. He immediately focused on technological modernization, launching the Army Transformation Initiative. This strategy sought to shift procurement toward commercially available products and increase drone manufacturing through a program called SkyFoundry. Beyond domestic policy, Driscoll played a central role in international diplomacy. In November 2025, he was dispatched to Kyiv alongside military leaders to present a peace plan to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, later meeting with officials in Geneva and Abu Dhabi to negotiate an end to the Russo-Ukrainian war.
Driscoll’s tenure was marked by friction with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Tensions escalated over personnel decisions, including Driscoll’s refusal to block the promotions of specific officers and Hegseth’s dismissal of General Randy George, a key ally of the secretary. By August 2026, reports indicated the two were barely speaking. Following stalled peace efforts and the scaling back of his modernization goals, Driscoll submitted his resignation, leaving his post on September 2, 2026. During this same period, he also served as the acting head of the federal agency responsible for regulating firearms and explosives.
