From car alarms to Congress: the unconventional career path of Darrell Issa
In short: Before becoming a long-serving U.S. representative, Darrell Issa built a fortune in the automotive security industry. His journey included military service, a controversial fire at his factory, and a pivot into politics that saw him become one of California's most significant individual campaign contributors to Republican candidates.
Born in 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio, Darrell Issa’s early life was marked by diverse influences, including his Maronite Catholic father and Latter-day Saint mother. At 17, he enlisted in the Army, serving as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician. His military tenure was punctuated by a 1972 hardship discharge following his father's heart attack and later legal troubles, including a 1971 indictment for grand theft auto that was eventually dropped. He later earned a degree and served in the Army Reserve, receiving high praise from then-Lt. Col. Wesley Clark.
Issa’s business career took off after he took control of Steal Stopper, a struggling car alarm manufacturer, by foreclosing on a loan. He transformed the company into a major supplier for Ford and Toyota. However, his business history faced scrutiny in 1982 when a fire destroyed his factory. While an investigation noted suspicious burn patterns and the use of accelerants, Issa maintained his innocence, and the company later thrived. He eventually sold the business and moved to California, founding Directed Electronics, Inc., which became famous for the Viper car alarm system.
Entering politics in the late 1990s, Issa leveraged his business success and personal wealth to fund his campaigns. After a failed 1998 Senate bid, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000. Over his career, he represented multiple districts in the San Diego area, chaired the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and navigated shifting political landscapes. Despite facing intense protests and tight electoral margins—most notably in 2016—Issa remained a fixture in California politics, eventually transitioning to the 50th district in 2020 before announcing his retirement from re-election in 2026.
