From backup quarterback to play-caller: the rapid rise of coach Davis Webb
In short: Davis Webb spent years as an NFL journeyman, often waiting on practice squads or serving as a backup. Yet, his transition from the gridiron to the sidelines has been remarkably swift. Now, as an offensive coordinator, he holds a rare responsibility that even veteran head coaches rarely delegate to others.
Davis Webb’s path to the NFL began at Texas Tech, where he emerged as a standout freshman quarterback. His collegiate career was defined by record-setting performances, including a notable MVP showing at the 2013 Holiday Bowl. After transferring to the University of California, Berkeley, for his final season, he continued to rack up impressive statistics, throwing for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns. This collegiate success led to his selection by the New York Giants in the 2017 NFL draft, where he was the fifth quarterback chosen.
His professional playing career was defined by patience and persistence. Webb spent years navigating the league, moving between the Giants, the New York Jets, and the Buffalo Bills. Despite being praised by teammates for his work ethic and potential, he saw very limited action on the field. It was not until January 2023, more than five years after being drafted, that he made his first and only career NFL start for the Giants. During that game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he recorded his only career passing and rushing touchdowns.
Webb’s transition into coaching was almost immediate. By February 2023, he joined the Denver Broncos as a quarterbacks coach under Sean Payton. His aptitude for the role was evident, as he had previously been courted for similar coaching duties while still a player in Buffalo. His trajectory within the Broncos organization accelerated quickly: he was promoted to offensive pass game coordinator in 2025 and then to offensive coordinator in February 2026.
The significance of his current role is underscored by Sean Payton’s decision to grant Webb play-calling duties. This move is historically notable, as it marks the first time in Payton’s long career as a head coach that he has delegated this specific responsibility. Webb’s rapid ascent from a backup player to a primary offensive strategist highlights a unique shift in his professional journey, moving from the uncertainty of the practice squad to the center of offensive decision-making.
