The keyboardist who plays with the fire of a rock guitarist
In short: Often described as the keyboard-playing version of Eddie Van Halen, Derek Sherinian has redefined the role of the synthesizer. Known for an aggressive, 'guitaristic' style, he has transitioned from playing with Alice Cooper to joining progressive metal titans like Dream Theater, earning him the title 'King of the Keys.'
Born in Laguna Beach, California, in 1966, Sherinian began his musical journey with piano lessons at age five. His technical prowess and versatility allowed him to transcend traditional keyboard roles, leading to a career defined by high-profile collaborations. He has toured and recorded with legends such as Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, and Joe Bonamassa. His ability to bridge genres is evidenced by his work with the progressive metal band Dream Theater, where he served as a full-time member from 1995 until his departure in January 1999 due to internal band turmoil.
Sherinian's influence extends through various musical movements, from the hard rock of the late 1980s to modern progressive metal. He co-established various supergroups, such as Sons of Apollo, Black Country Communion, Planet X, and Whom Gods Destroy. His solo discography includes nine albums, often featuring virtuoso guests like Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai. In 2021, MusicRadar.com named him the 'Greatest Keyboardist Of The 21st Century,' while Japan's BURRN! Magazine has repeatedly voted him their top keyboardist between 2020 and 2025.
His stylistic approach is often characterized by a 'shredder' mentality. While he has roots in jazz fusion, he approaches the genre from the perspective of a rock player. This unique fusion of styles has earned him nicknames ranging from 'the Caligula of Keyboards' from Alice Cooper to 'the King of the Keys' from Guitar World. Whether performing at a sold-out Budokan or touring the Chitlin' Circuit in his early career, Sherinian remains a pivotal figure in contemporary instrumental music.
