From an internment camp to the halls of Congress
In short: Born in a wartime relocation center, Doris Matsui rose from a White House staffer to a powerful voice in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her journey from the Poston War Relocation Center to the halls of power reflects a lifetime of navigating the complexities of American politics and advocacy.
Doris Kazue Matsui's political career is deeply rooted in her personal history. Born on September 25, 1944, in the Poston War Relocation Center internment camp in Arizona, she grew up in Dinuba, California. After earning a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, she entered the political sphere through service to the Clinton Administration. From 1993 to 1998, she acted as deputy director of public liaison and deputy special assistant to the president, reporting to Alexis Herman.
Matsui was instrumental in establishing the inaugural White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders during 1999. This advocacy continued into her legislative career. Since 2005, she has represented California's 7th congressional district, a seat she first won in a special election following the death of her husband, Representative Bob Matsui, on January 1, 2005. In that election, she secured 68% of the vote.
Currently, Matsui wields substantial power on the House Energy and Commerce committee as the ranking member of its Communications and Technology Subcommittee. Her legislative priorities are broad, ranging from supporting stem cell research and renewable energy—aiming for the U.S. to run on at least 25% renewable energy by 2025—to advocating for pay equity for the U.S. women's national soccer team through the GOALS Act. She remains a consistent presence in Sacramento-based politics, having been reelected continuously since 2006.
Her policy stances reflect a progressive orientation; for instance, she voted with President Joe Biden 100% of the time during the 117th Congress. Her work spans diverse issues, including gun control, healthcare expansion, and international relations, including support for Ukraine and critical views of certain aspects of Israeli government policy.
