From extreme poverty to two-time world champion in mixed martial arts
In short: Born into dire poverty in the Philippines, Eduard Folayang overcame immense hardship to become a professional fighter. After losing five siblings due to limited healthcare access, he transformed his life through wushu and boxing, eventually capturing two major world titles in the ONE Championship lightweight division.
Eduard Folayang's journey is defined by resilience. Born on November 22, 1983, in Baguio, his upbringing was marked by severe economic struggle. His parents were of Igorot descent from Mountain Province, and the family's lack of medical resources resulted in the death of five of his siblings. Despite these early hardships, Folayang pursued education, graduating from the University of the Cordilleras in 2006 and briefly working as an English and Physical Education teacher before committing fully to combat sports.
His professional ascent was marked by significant milestones in various promotions. He began training wushu and boxing at age 16 under coach Tony Candelaria. After a successful professional debut in the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) in 2007, where he defeated Allan Co to become the welterweight champion, he transitioned into international prominence. He became a decorated wushu practitioner, earning a gold medal at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games and several other medals at the Asian and World Wushu Championships.
In the ONE Championship arena, Folayang established himself as a premier lightweight. He secured the lightweight world title twice, first by defeating Shinya Aoki via TKO in the third round on November 11, 2016, and later recapturing it by defeating Amir Khan via unanimous decision on November 23, 2018. His career has been characterized by intense rivalries, including a series of bouts against Aoki. Today, he uses his platform to support charities that provide education for underprivileged Filipino children.
Folayang's career also saw a significant organizational shift. Having belonged to Baguio's Team Lakay Wushu between 2007 and March 10, 2023, he established Lions Nation MMA with various ex-teammates.
