From Olympic bronze to heavyweight champion: the striking evolution of Robelis Despaigne
In short: After winning an Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo, Robelis Despaigne faced a crossroads in 2012. Dissatisfied with the state of sports in Cuba, he eventually transitioned from elite martial arts to the high-stakes world of mixed martial arts, eventually becoming a heavyweight champion.
Despaigne's journey began in Cuba, where he started taekwondo at age nine. His technical proficiency led to a 15-year tenure on the Cuban national team, culminating in a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the +80 kg category. During that Olympic run, he secured victories over Chika Yagazie Chukwumerije and Kaino Thomsen-Fuataga, though he suffered a quarterfinal loss to Anthony Obame.
The transition to mixed martial arts (MMA) was not immediate. Following the 2012 Olympics, Despaigne felt a growing lack of passion for taekwondo due to the sporting climate in Cuba. Despite initial hesitations regarding the knockout-heavy nature of MMA, he began MMA-specific training in Cuba in 2019, eventually relocating to Orlando, Florida, in 2022 due to pandemic-related delays.
Despaigne's professional MMA career has been defined by explosive finishes. After making his debut in June 2022, he signed with the UFC in December 2023. His performance against Josh Parisian at UFC 299 in March 2024, a knockout lasting just 18 seconds, earned him a Performance of the Night award and marked the second-fastest knockout by a debuting heavyweight in UFC history.
Following a period of release from the UFC, Despaigne signed with Karate Combat in November 2024. He achieved significant success there, winning the 'Last Man Standing' 8-man heavyweight tournament in July 2025 and subsequently winning the Karate Combat heavyweight championship by knockout in December 2025 against Sam Alvey.
