In short: Before the lounge suit defined the modern professional, the frock coat ruled the streets. Once a practical military garment designed for warmth and durability, this knee-length icon evolved into the ultimate symbol of nineteenth-century status, eventually becoming so formal it was nearly abolished by royal decree.

Emerging during the Napoleonic Wars, the frock coat likely had military origins, serving as a practical layer for officers in German and Austrian armies to protect their uniforms and provide warmth. While the 18th-century 'frock' was a casual country garment, the nineteenth-century frock coat was a different beast entirely. By the 1820s, it began to incorporate features like full-length trousers and a more structured fit, eventually becoming the standard for professional and business attire throughout the Victorian era.

The garment's construction was a masterclass in tailoring, characterized by extreme waist suppression. Tailors used a high horizontal waist seam and extra fabric panels, known as side bodies, to pull in the cylindrical drape of the cloth and create an hourglass figure. This precision extended to the lapels, which were often cut from separate pieces of fabric. While black was the established standard, more adventurous wearers might opt for charcoal grey or even midnight blue, often paired with striped or checked trousers.

The coat's decline was driven by a shift toward casualness. The 'morning coat'—originally a casual equestrian piece known as a Newmarket coat—gradually supplanted the frock coat as preferred daytime dress. By the 1920s, the transition was well underway. The final blow came in 1936, when Edward VIII officially removed the frock coat from the protocol of British royal audiences. Today, the garment survives primarily as a ceremonial rarity for weddings and traditional processions.
