In short: Fashion in the mid-19th century was a tug-of-war between extreme volume and revolutionary practicality. While women were encased in expanding steel cages, men were quietly transitioning toward the silhouette of the modern business suit—all while radical reformers attempted to spark a clothing revolution that faced intense public mockery.

The 1850s was a decade of architectural expansion for women's fashion. Early in the decade, skirts were made voluminous through tiers of deep ruffles called flounces, which were gathered at the waist and reinforced with horsehair braid along the hem. This changed drastically in 1856 with the introduction of the steel cage crinoline. This innovation allowed skirts to expand even further while remaining smooth over the petticoat. To maintain modesty under these wide shapes, women began wearing pantalettes as an essential undergarment.

While female fashion was largely dictated by Paris, masculine styles were rooted in London. The era saw a significant shift toward modern tailoring: heavy, fitted frock coats became standard for business, while the 'sack coat' emerged for leisure. This loosely fitted garment reached mid-thigh and would eventually evolve into the contemporary suit coat over the following forty years. Additionally, the popularity of detachable shirt collars and cuffs surged during this period.

This era also birthed a major cultural friction point: dress reform. In 1851, Libby Miller introduced the 'Bloomer suit,' featuring loose trousers gathered at the ankles and a skirt hemmed below the knee. Despite its focus on rationality and movement, it was widely ridiculed by the press and failed to gain mainstream traction. Meanwhile, fashion remained a site of satire; the sheer size of crinolines inspired numerous cartoons mocking their impracticality in public spaces like omnibuses.
