In short: Growing up in a spiritual household in the Netherlands, Halina Reijn lived a life devoid of cinema and TV. Instead, her world was built on music, painting, and a theater room built by her father. This unconventional upbringing set the stage for an extraordinary career in international film and stage.

Born in 1975 in Amsterdam, Reijn spent her early years in the small village of Wildervank. Raised in an anthroposophy household following the Subud movement, her upbringing was intentionally disconnected from mass media. Her parents, both artists, replaced the screen with creative pursuits like drawing and music. This artistic immersion was deepened by her father, who constructed a private theater room with a podium and flats specifically for her.

Her transition from a child of the arts to a professional performer was sparked by a single moment: seeing the film 'Annie' at age six. This early spark led her to join a youth theater in Veermand and later attend the selective Vooropleiding Theater academy in Groningen for eight years. Despite personal tragedies, including the sudden death of her father from a pulmonary embolism when she was ten, Reijn pursued her ambitions with a drive to become a child star.

Reijn's career is marked by both prestigious accolades and significant industry shifts. In 1998, she won the Colombina for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'Shopping and Fucking'. She later became a fixture in major productions, such as Paul Verhoeven's 'Black Book', the most expensive Dutch film ever made, with a budget of $21 million. Her journey has seen her move from minor television roles to leading roles in international co-productions, navigating the complexities of both the Dutch stage and the global film industry.
