How two television production professionals became Britain's most beloved motorcycle-riding celebrity chef duo
In short: Dave Myers and Si King transformed from behind-the-scenes industry veterans into a cultural phenomenon. By blending travelogues with culinary exploration and their signature banter, they redefined the food show format. Their two-decade journey spanned over 30 television series, proving that a shared passion for motorbikes and cooking creates enduring television.
Before they were household names, Dave Myers and Si King were seasoned professionals in the television and film industry. Myers worked as a head of prosthetics, hair, and make-up, while King served as a locations manager for major productions, including the Harry Potter films. Their paths crossed in 1995 on the set of the television drama The Gambling Man, and they launched their joint career as presenters with The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook in 2004.
The duo’s format drew inspiration from predecessors like Keith Floyd and the Two Fat Ladies, emphasizing a mix of travel, cooking, and candid interactions with the production crew. Their shows were defined by their use of motorbikes—such as the BMW R1200GS and Triumph Rocket III—to traverse landscapes from the Mississippi River to Asian destinations like South Korea and Japan. Beyond travel, they engaged in diverse projects, including a theatre show directed by Bob Mortimer and campaigns to support local services like Meals on Wheels.
Their partnership was marked by personal resilience and a commitment to their craft. In 2012, they successfully campaigned to lose weight while maintaining their love for food, and in 2022, Myers revealed a cancer diagnosis. Despite his treatment, they continued filming, completing their final series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, which aired in 2024. Myers died on 28 February 2024, leaving behind a legacy of 27 cookbooks and a unique television style that combined culinary expertise with the spirit of the open road.
