How a secret rhythm game became a corporate pawn and a studio's lifeline
In short: Tango Gameworks, a studio famous for survival horror, shocked the industry by releasing a vibrant rhythm-action game in total secrecy. Despite its massive success and critical acclaim, the title became a casualty of corporate restructuring, only to be saved by a surprise acquisition that secured its future.
Conceived in 2017 by director John Johanas, Hi-Fi Rush marked a radical departure for Tango Gameworks. Seeking to move beyond the survival horror of The Evil Within 2, the team drew inspiration from the kinetic visual style of director Edgar Wright. Development was kept under strict wraps to avoid misaligned expectations, culminating in a surprise simultaneous announcement and release on January 25, 2023, for Windows and Xbox Series X/S.
The game features Chai, a protagonist whose music player is accidentally embedded in his chest, allowing him to perceive the world through rhythm. This mechanic extends to combat, where players are rewarded for chaining attacks in sync with the soundtrack, which includes licensed tracks from bands like Nine Inch Nails and The Black Keys. Beyond the beat-em-up action, the game incorporates platforming, puzzles, and a narrative involving a corrupt corporation, Vandelay Technologies, that uses cybernetic implants for mind control.
Despite reaching 3 million players by August 2023, the studio faced a turbulent corporate journey. Microsoft Gaming closed Tango Gameworks in June 2024, citing a need to prioritize high-impact titles. However, the studio's legacy proved resilient. In August 2024, Krafton acquired the studio and the Hi-Fi Rush license, effectively reviving the team. By November 14, 2025, all publishing rights had transferred to Krafton, ensuring the franchise could continue under new ownership while the original developer remained intact.
