How one manager became the enduring face of Turkish football's most storied club
In short: Born in 1961, İsmail Kartal has spent decades intertwined with Fenerbahçe, first as a dedicated player and later as a recurring manager. From his early days on the pitch to navigating the high-pressure environment of modern European competition, his career reflects the intense, often volatile nature of Turkish football management.
İsmail Kartal, nicknamed Arap İsmail due to his tanned complexion, began his professional journey in Istanbul before establishing himself as a fixture at Fenerbahçe. Between 1983 and 1993, he made 235 appearances for the club, securing two national league titles during the 1984–85 and 1988–89 seasons. His playing career concluded after stints at Denizlispor and Adanaspor, having represented the Turkish national team six times between 1982 and 1985.
Transitioning into management, Kartal built his reputation by guiding various clubs, including Sivasspor and Ankaragücü, to promotion into the Süper Lig. His relationship with Fenerbahçe, however, remains his most defining narrative. He has served four distinct managerial spells at the club, navigating complex challenges ranging from domestic title races to the pressures of international competition. His 2023–24 tenure was particularly notable for a high-scoring campaign where the team earned 99 points, yet still finished as runners-up to rivals Galatasaray.
The volatility of his position was highlighted in late 2026. After leading Fenerbahçe to the Champions League league phase for the first time in 18 years, Kartal faced intense scrutiny from fans and the media. Following a draw against Roma in September 2026, he attempted to resign amid hostile behavior from supporters. Despite his public declaration that he would not return, the club’s leadership intervened to retain him, underscoring the unique, often strained bond between the manager and the institution he has served for much of his professional life.
