The enduring heartbeat of Deep Purple: Ian Paice's relentless half-century behind the kit
In short: Ian Paice is the only constant in the turbulent history of Deep Purple, serving as the band's drummer since its 1968 inception. Beyond his legendary status in rock, he has navigated health scares, session work with icons like Paul McCartney, and a career defined by unwavering musical consistency.
Born in Nottingham in 1948, Ian Paice began his professional journey in the early 1960s. His trajectory shifted permanently in 1968 when he co-founded Deep Purple, a band he has never left. While the group experienced a significant hiatus between 1976 and 1984, Paice remained prolific, collaborating with acts like Whitesnake and Gary Moore. His technical prowess and reliability have earned him profound respect from peers, with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore famously describing him as the motor of the band.
Paice’s influence extends far beyond his primary group. He has contributed to recordings by artists ranging from the Velvet Underground to George Harrison and Paul McCartney. His versatility is equally evident in his charity work, including the Sunflower Jam, a London-based initiative founded by his wife, Jacky Paice. These efforts have seen him perform alongside legends like Robert Plant, Brian May, and John Paul Jones, demonstrating a commitment to the craft that transcends genre boundaries.
Despite his public persona, Paice’s life has been marked by resilience. A childhood bout of tuberculosis left him missing a portion of his left lung, a fact that fueled persistent, inaccurate rumors about his health. In 2016, he faced a transient ischaemic attack, forcing the first cancellations of his career. Yet, he returned to the stage within weeks, underscoring a dedication that has kept him at the forefront of rock drumming for over fifty years. He remains a singular figure, celebrated not just for his technical skill, but for his enduring presence in the industry.
