How a South African tennis prodigy conquered the world and redefined sports leadership
In short: In 1976, Ilana Kloss reached the summit of professional tennis, becoming the world's number one doubles player. But her legacy extends far beyond the court, spanning decades of executive leadership, championship ownership, and a profound impact on the global landscape of professional women's sports.
Born in Johannesburg in 1956, Kloss’s ascent in tennis was rapid. Before even turning professional, she secured junior titles at both Wimbledon in 1972 and the US Open in 1974. By 1976, she had achieved the top doubles ranking in the world and reached number 19 in singles, a feat complemented by a dominant season that included titles at the US Open, the French Open mixed doubles, and the German Open.
Her prowess was not limited to the professional circuit; she was a decorated competitor in the Maccabiah Games, securing three gold medals in 1973 across singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Her early career also saw her representing South Africa in the Federation Cup from 1973 to 1977, maintaining a notable 12–5 win-loss record during that period.
Transitioning from player to administrator, Kloss became a pillar of World TeamTennis (WTT). After coaching the Chicago Fyre to a championship and a Coach of the Year title in 1983, she ascended through the executive ranks, serving as vice-president in 1987 and executive director in 1991. She eventually led the league as commissioner from 2001 to 2021.
Today, Kloss's influence permeates various sporting ventures. Alongside her spouse, tennis legend Billie Jean King, she holds minority ownership in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angel City FC. Her enduring impact on hockey is cemented by the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP award, established within the Professional Women's Hockey League following its 2023 formation.
