How a Russian-born immigrant became a dominant force in professional wrestling's elite ranks
In short: Ilja Rukober, known as Ilja Dragunov, rose from humble beginnings in Dresden to become a decorated champion in WWE. His journey, defined by a legendary rivalry with Walter and a relentless in-ring style, saw him make history as the first non-kayfabe Russian-born male wrestler to capture a WWE championship title.
Born in Moscow in 1993, Rukober moved to Germany at age five, navigating a new language and culture while working odd jobs to support his family. He entered the professional wrestling world in 2012, training at the German Wrestling Federation school. His early career was anchored by a seven-year stint at Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw), where he became the inaugural Shotgun Champion and the first wrestler to complete the promotion's Triple Crown.
Dragunov's ascent was marked by a fierce, years-long feud with Walter, which began in the European independent scene and intensified upon their arrival in WWE's NXT UK brand. This rivalry culminated in a pivotal 2021 encounter at NXT TakeOver 36, where Dragunov ended Walter's two-year championship reign. His success continued in the United States, where he became the first performer to hold both the NXT and NXT United Kingdom titles. By 2023, he was recognized as a top-tier talent, winning Match of the Year honors for his clash with Carmelo Hayes at NXT No Mercy.
Beyond his physical accolades, Dragunov's career was marked by resilience. He overcame significant injuries, including a skull fracture during a 2013 tryout and a torn ACL in 2025, which sidelined him for a year. Returning to the main roster in late 2025, he captured the WWE United States Championship. Throughout his tenure, he navigated personal challenges, including a long-term struggle with panic attacks, which he commemorated with a symbolic neck tattoo. After seven years with WWE, he departed the company in August 2026, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most intense and accomplished performers of his generation.
