How a blunt, ten-track live album redefined the sound of 1970s hard rock
In short: While many 1970s bands bloated their live albums with extended, tedious solos, AC/DC did the opposite. Their 1978 release, If You Want Blood You've Got It, stripped away the excess to capture the raw, reckless energy of a band at their peak, forever changing the standard for concert recordings.
It was recorded at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow on 30 April 1978, during the tour for the studio album Powerage. The project replaced a planned 'best-of' compilation, with producers Harry Vanda and George Young opting to capture the band's live intensity instead. The result was a concise, ten-track record that avoided the common seventies trend of stretching songs into self-indulgent jams, focusing instead on the band's signature bluesy, high-voltage rock.
The album's title originated from a July 1978 festival appearance where Bon Scott, asked by a journalist what fans could expect, simply replied, 'Blood.' The cover art, featuring a staged image of Angus Young impaled by his guitar, was shot in Boston in August 1978. Despite the album's success—eventually ranking second on Classic Rock magazine's list of the greatest live albums—it remains a snapshot of a specific era. Malcolm Young later reflected that the record captured the band when they were 'young, fresh, vital and kicking ass' just before their 1979 US breakthrough.
The Glasgow concert itself remains legendary, particularly for an encore where the band donned Scottish football strips to honor their heritage. While the full concert footage has never been released, segments have surfaced over the years on compilations like Family Jewels and Plug Me In. Certain tracks, such as 'Dog Eat Dog', were excluded from the original album release, and the encore 'Fling Thing'—a traditional Scottish folk song—was edited down. These omissions highlight the band's commitment to a tight, punchy listening experience, cementing the album's reputation as a definitive, if hastily assembled, document of AC/DC's raw power.
