Can a powerhouse trio of stars save a middling psychological thriller?
In short: When Apple TV premiered Imperfect Women in March 2026, critics were divided. While the cast features heavyweights like Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss, reviewers struggled to find much substance beneath the surface of this gripping, secret-filled murder mystery.
Adapted from Araminta Hall's 2020 novel, the miniseries Imperfect Women follows the fallout of a devastating crime that fractures a long-standing friendship between three women. The narrative centers on Eleanor, played by Kerry Washington, and Mary, played by Elisabeth Moss, as they navigate grief and assist Detective Bethany Ganz, played by Ana Ortiz, in investigating the murder of Nancy, portrayed by Kate Mara.
The production saw significant momentum throughout 2025. Following the initial optioning of the book by Love & Squalor Pictures, Annie Weisman was announced as the creator in March 2024. The cast expanded steadily, with Kate Mara joining in January 2025, followed by the addition of Joel Kinnaman and Corey Stoll in April 2025. Filming commenced in Los Angeles in May 2025, supported by a Californian tax credit granted in December 2024.
Despite the high-profile ensemble—which includes Leslie Odom Jr. and Elisabeth Moss as executive producers—the series met with a lukewarm critical reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show holds a 43% approval rating from 46 critics, with a consensus suggesting that the impressive lead trio could not overcome a narrative lacking in originality. Metacritic similarly reflected this mixed reception, assigning a weighted average score of 54 out of 100.
The plot weaves a complex web of interpersonal secrets, ranging from Eleanor's affair with her subordinate, Jordan, to the dark history involving Nancy's mother and her former partner, Scott Reid. As the investigation unfolds, the series explores how a single death can unearth decades of buried truths within a tight-knit community.
