In short: Ti West’s 2016 film In a Valley of Violence is a deliberate, stylistic homage to classic Westerns. While it struggled to find a commercial audience in theaters, the film earned critical praise for its sharp screenplay, dark humor, and the performances of leads Ethan Hawke and John Travolta.

Set in the 1870s, the story follows a drifter named Paul and his dog, Abbie, as they travel toward Mexico. Their path crosses with a disgraced bandit known as Priest, before they arrive in Denton, a struggling boomtown. The narrative tension escalates when Paul clashes with Gilly, the arrogant son of the town’s U.S. Marshal, Clyde Martin. This confrontation leads to a cycle of violence that forces Paul to abandon his vow of pacifism after a personal tragedy.

Director Ti West, known for his work in horror, approached the project with a clear vision, intentionally crafting a Western that maintained its genre identity from the opening frame to the final shot. Filmed over 25 days in 2014 at a custom-built set in Galisteo, New Mexico, the production utilized 35mm film to achieve its aesthetic. The cast includes Taissa Farmiga as the innkeeper Mary-Anne and Karen Gillan as her sister Ellen, both of whom become entangled in the town's unfolding conflict.

Despite its limited theatrical run—opening in just over thirty locations—the film garnered a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics noted that while the film occasionally suffers from a tonal shift toward the end, it succeeds as a smart, enjoyable genre exercise. West’s collaboration with producer Jason Blum and composer Jeff Grace helped define the film’s distinct, often humorous, and violent character, solidifying its status as a deliberate, artistically driven project rather than a standard genre retread.
