From royal bridesmaid to global entrepreneur: the multifaceted life of India Hicks
In short: Born into the upper echelons of British society, India Hicks transitioned from a fashion model and interior designer to a successful businesswoman. Her journey spans from the halls of royal weddings to the front lines of international disaster relief, driven by a diverse career in design, media, and philanthropy.
India Hicks, born in London in 1967, possesses a lineage deeply connected to the British monarchy. Being a relative of the British royals and a maternal descendant of the Mountbatten lineage, her childhood involved both hardship and luxury. In 1979, while on holiday in Ireland, she witnessed the death of her grandfather, the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, in a bombing incident involving his boat.
Her professional trajectory has been remarkably varied. After studying photography at the New England School of Photography, graduating in 1990, she worked as a model for prominent brands including Ralph Lauren, Emilio Pucci, and J.Crew. Her creative pursuits later shifted toward interior design and lifestyle branding. In the Bahamas, where she moved in 1996, she published several books, such as 'Island Life' and 'Island Style', and established the Sugar Mill Trading Company.
Beyond aesthetics, Hicks has built a significant commercial presence. Her e-commerce venture, India Hicks Inc., launched in 2015, grew to achieve annual revenues exceeding $10 million. She has also served as a creative consultant for Crabtree & Evelyn and worked with the Home Shopping Network. In recent years, her focus has expanded to humanitarian efforts; since joining the board of the Global Empowerment Mission in 2019, she has traveled to disaster sites in the Abaco Islands, Alabama, Florida, and Poland.
Despite her high-profile life, Hicks has faced public scrutiny, including a 2020 incident where she pleaded guilty to shoplifting a coat, an act her spokesperson attributed to absent-mindedness.
