In short: Founded in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great, the Jagiellonian University has survived empires, wars, and even the threat of being turned into a laundry. Today, it remains a global research powerhouse, housing the revolutionary works of Copernicus and a library of 6.5 million volumes.

The university's origins lie in a strategic need for a professional class of lawyers to manage the Polish legal system. Following a royal charter on 12 May 1364, the institution began as the Studium Generale. While its early years saw periods of instability following the death of Casimir III, the university was revitalized in the 1390s by Queen Jadwiga. Her personal devotion to the institution was profound; she even donated her personal jewelry to fund the enrollment of 203 students.

The institution's academic prestige grew through significant structural reforms. In 1400, Władysław II Jagiełło modeled the university after the Sorbonne, establishing a Faculty of Theology. It later became a pioneer in the sciences, being the first European university to create dedicated, independent chairs for Astronomy and Mathematics. This era of expansion saw the creation of the Collegium Maius, a site that helped cement the university's reputation as a central hub for learning in Central Europe.

Despite its illustrious alumni—including four Nobel laureates in literature and the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus—the university faced existential crises. During the late 18th century, economic decline left buildings in such disrepair that some were nearly repurposed for laundries. The 20th century brought even darker trials, including the 1939 arrest and deportation of 184 professors by Nazi forces during Sonderaktion Krakau. However, through periods of Austrian rule and Communist suppression, the university has continuously evolved, now integrating modern research through its 600th Anniversary Campus.
