From bullied student to a monument of trans advocacy
In short: Jiggly Caliente's journey from a childhood of bullying in the Philippines to becoming a household name in drag is a story of radical transformation. Beyond the glamour of RuPaul's Drag Race, her life was defined by a persistent struggle for visibility and a legacy of advocacy that now stands in stone.
Born in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines, in 1980, Bianca Castro-Arabejo faced significant hardship early in life. Growing up in a household marked by her father's mistreatment and a Catholic upbringing, she experienced severe bullying and body-shaming in the first grade, which led to her expulsion after she stabbed a classmate's hand with a pencil. Moving to Queens, New York, at 10 years old in 1991, she later identified as gay during her junior high school year.
Caliente's entry into the drag world was born of a dare in 2004 or 2005. She adopted the name Jiggly Caliente, blending the Pokémon character Jigglypuff with the Spanish word for 'hot.' Her career quickly accelerated through beauty pageants, where she won titles such as Ms. Asia America 2006 and Ms. Universo Latina Plus 2009. She achieved mainstream recognition as a contestant on the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2012, later becoming a recurring actress on the drama series Pose and a judge on Drag Race Philippines.
Her impact on the community was cemented through her advocacy and artistic contributions. In 2016, she publicly came out as transgender, a realization she attributed to letters from fans struggling with their own identities. In 2018, she launched T.H.O.T., which marked the initial hip-hop-oriented project from a Drag Race participant. Process. Following her death in April 2025 at age 44 due to a severe infection, she was inducted into the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor at the Stonewall Inn in June 2025, recognized for her role as a transgender advocate.
