In short: Vincent Belorgey, known as Kavinsky, crafted a cinematic soundscape inspired by 1980s film soundtracks. By adopting a fictional zombie persona who crashed his Ferrari in 1986, he bypassed the vanity of celebrity to focus on storytelling, eventually influencing global pop culture through his iconic track Nightcall and a distinct synth-pop aesthetic.

Born in the Barbès neighborhood of Paris in 1975, Vincent Belorgey began his career as an actor before transitioning to music in 2005. Encouraged by friends Jackson Fourgeaud and Quentin Dupieux, he started producing on an old Apple computer. His debut EP, Teddy Boy, released in 2006, was recorded entirely on a Yamaha DX7, an instrument synonymous with the synth-pop era. This commitment to a retro-futuristic sound defined his career, as he sought to consolidate the best elements of thousands of films he watched during his youth into a single, cohesive musical concept.

The Kavinsky persona was a deliberate artistic choice to avoid the traditional celebrity spotlight. The character, depicted with blue skin and red eyes, was a zombie who returned to life in 2006 after a fatal 1986 car crash. This narrative framework allowed Belorgey to explore themes of alienation and nostalgia, most notably in the track Nightcall. The song gained massive international recognition after its inclusion in the 2011 film Drive, and it remained a cultural touchstone years later, seeing a resurgence after a 2024 performance at the Paris Summer Olympics. The track was even covered by the Irish band Inhaler in 2025.

Belorgey passed away in Paris on 28 July 2026, just days before his 51st birthday. While the official cause of death remains under investigation, authorities have noted that a stroke is suspected. His death prompted tributes from figures including French President Emmanuel Macron and the Weeknd. Beyond his personal legacy, his influence persists through his two studio albums, OutRun and Reborn, and his role in shaping the modern French house scene alongside contemporaries like Daft Punk and Justice. His work remains a testament to the power of blending visual storytelling with electronic production.
