From bikini model to wrestling champion: the unconventional career of Barbie Blank
In short: Before she was a WWE Divas Champion, Barbie Blank was a model for Venus Swimwear with no wrestling experience. Discovered by a WWE official in 2006, she transformed from a ring announcer into a trailblazing performer, eventually becoming the first woman to hold the WWE 24/7 Championship in 2019.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1987, Barbara Jean Blank initially pursued a career in broadcast journalism. Her path shifted dramatically in 2006 when WWE official John Laurinaitis recruited her from her modeling work. Despite lacking formal training, she signed a contract and began developing her skills in Ohio Valley Wrestling. By June 2006, she debuted on the ECW brand as Kelly Kelly, becoming the youngest Diva on the roster at age 19.
Her early WWE tenure was defined by the controversial 'Kelly's Exposé' segments, where her character performed stripteases. However, she soon transitioned into active competition. Her career reached a peak in June 2011 when she won the WWE Divas Championship, holding the title for 104 days. Beyond her in-ring achievements, she made history in 2019 by pinning Gerald Brisco to become the first female WWE 24/7 Champion. She officially retired from full-time wrestling in 2012 but has returned for sporadic appearances, including multiple Royal Rumble matches.
Outside the ring, Blank has maintained a diverse public profile. She was a main cast member on the reality show WAGS and appeared in the 2020 film Disturbing the Peace. Following the death of her father, Ron, from glioblastoma in 2018, she co-founded the non-profit Cure Glioblastoma to raise awareness for brain cancer. Today, she continues to work as a fashion influencer and maintains her connection to the wrestling world through a legends deal signed with WWE in 2025.
