The Soviet republic that was the last to leave the Union
In short: From the devastating famines of the 1930s to the launch of Sputnik, the Kazakh SSR was a landscape of extreme contradictions. It was a vital industrial engine for the USSR, yet it endured forced migrations and a nomadic way of life shattered by central planning.
The Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, established as a Union-level republic on 5 December 1936, was the second-largest territory in the USSR. While it became a powerhouse of mineral extraction, oil, and agriculture, its development was often marked by profound human suffering. During the early 1930s, Joseph Stalin's policies of forced collectivization and the disastrous agricultural methods of Trofim Lysenko triggered a deadly famine. Between 1930 and 1933, an estimated 1 to 2 million people perished, and up to 40% of ethnic Kazakhs either died or fled the territory.
The republic's ethnic landscape was also reshaped by Stalinist engineering. Between 1937 and 1953, the Soviet government conducted forced deportations of various minorities, including over 170,000 Koreans from the Russian Far East. These migrations, alongside the influx of Russian, Ukrainian, and German settlers, significantly altered the native Turkic demographic. By the 1960s, the country saw massive industrial growth and high literacy rates, reaching nearly 97%, yet the focus on heavy industry often came at the expense of consumer goods.
The era of Dinmukhamed Kunaev is often remembered as a period of relative prosperity and political autonomy. However, the late 1980s brought instability. Following the dismissal of Kunaev by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986, the Jeltoqsan riots broke out in Alma-Ata, resulting in 168–200 civilian deaths. Ultimately, the Kazakh SSR became the final piece of the Soviet puzzle, declaring independence on 16 December 1991, just six days before the official dissolution of the Soviet Union.
