From midfield trainee to a Premier League stalwart
In short: Kevin Miller’s footballing journey was defined by an unexpected positional shift. Originally a midfielder in Cornwall, he transitioned to goalkeeping at fifteen, eventually amassing over 600 professional appearances and becoming a high-value transfer in the English top flight.
Born in Falmouth, Cornwall, Miller’s professional trajectory began with a significant tactical pivot. While developing in the Falmouth Town youth scheme as a midfielder, he was encouraged to move into goal by manager Keith Rashleigh while playing in the Combination League. This change proved fruitful; during his time at Newquay under Trevor Mewton, he set a record for the fewest goals conceded in the South Western League.
His professional career spanned eighteen years, marked by several high-profile moves. After finding success at Exeter City—where he helped the club secure a Fourth Division Championship—he followed manager Terry Cooper to clubs including Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, and Barnsley. A significant moment arrived in June 1997, when Crystal Palace signed him from Watford for a career-high fee of £1.5 million, a move that occurred after a failed negotiation with Nottingham Forest.
Miller's reliability was a hallmark of his later years. At Watford, he earned the Player of the Season award twice, in 1995 and 1997. Even after an initial retirement in August 2005, he returned to the professional game with Southampton in February 2006 to provide cover. He concluded his playing days in non-league football with Bodmin Town, retiring at age 46 before a brief final season. Following his playing career, he transitioned into coaching, serving as a goalkeeping coach at both Exeter City and Wigan Athletic under manager Gary Caldwell.
Miller passed away unexpectedly on 15 September 2026, at the age of 57.
