Killer Frost is not one person, but a mantle shared by three distinct metahumans.
In short: Across decades of DC Comics, the name Killer Frost has belonged to three different women, each bound by a tragic connection to the superhero Firestorm. Whether through scientific accidents or vengeful experiments, these characters share a lethal ability to absorb heat and weaponize the resulting cold against their enemies.
The mantle of Killer Frost originated with Crystal Frost, a scientist who gained cryokinetic powers after an accident in an Arctic thermafrost chamber. Driven by a misandristic crusade, she sought revenge against her former professor, Martin Stein, and frequently clashed with Firestorm. Her tenure ended when she attempted to absorb too much of Firestorm's energy, resulting in a fatal explosion. Her friend, Dr. Louise Lincoln, later assumed the identity to avenge her death, becoming a ruthless villain who served in groups like the Suicide Squad and the Secret Society of Super Villains.
The New 52 reboot introduced a third iteration, Dr. Caitlin Snow, a brilliant S.T.A.R. Labs scientist. During an infiltration by H.I.V.E. agents at an Arctic outpost, she was trapped within a thermodynamic engine and merged with its coolant system. This transformation turned her into a heat vampire, forcing her to consume the warmth of living beings to survive. Unlike her predecessors, Snow eventually sought redemption, joining the Justice League of America and learning to control her hunger by absorbing only trace amounts of heat from those she touches.
While their origins differ, all three incarnations possess the ability to transmute absorbed heat into devastating waves of cold. They can generate ice shields, projectiles, and intense blizzards, and their touch is lethal to normal humans. However, their power is inherently unstable; they rely on external heat sources to function and risk death if their internal energy reserves are depleted. This dependency has led to diverse adaptations across media, from the Arrowverse's Caitlin Snow to various animated and video game appearances voiced by actors like Jennifer Hale.
