How a metal cover of Lady Gaga turned a Tasmanian drummer into a global sensation
In short: In late 2020, a heavy metal reimagining of Lady Gaga's 'Paparazzi' exploded across social media. The artist behind it, Kim Dracula, leveraged viral platforms to bridge the gap between underground metal and mainstream pop, rapidly ascending the ranks of Australia's most influential digital musicians.
Originally a drummer for Tasmanian folk-punk group The Dead Maggies and vocalist for the heavy metal band Jesterpose, Kim Dracula achieved sudden visibility through a genre-bending approach. The turning point arrived in November 2020 with a metal cover of Lady Gaga's 'Paparazzi.' The track's impact was immediate and massive: by the end of that year, it had amassed six million YouTube views, thirteen million Spotify plays, and appeared in over 60,000 TikTok clips. Before this solo breakthrough, they served as the drummer for several different musical groups. Their musical roots also include a stint as the frontman for the Australian heavy metal outfit Jesterpose, which released the EP COVID-19 in 2020.
This viral momentum translated into significant chart success. In January 2021, the 'Paparazzi' cover reached number 4 on Spotify's Global Viral 50. At that same time, Kim Dracula debuted at position 47 on the Billboard Emerging Artists list, propelled by the track's number 31 ranking on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. The magnitude of this trend was clear by April 2021, as the cover accumulated 33 million YouTube views and 55 million Spotify streams. By the spring of 2021, the artist had become the second most followed Australian personality on TikTok, trailing only Sia. This rapid ascent placed them among the top four most followed Australian music artists on the platform for 2020.
Beyond covers, Kim Dracula has established a distinct original identity. Their debut album, A Gradual Decline in Morale, released on 14 July 2023, features 20 tracks. Critics, including Rock Sound magazine, have praised their 2022 singles 'Make Me Far' and 'Drown' for their stylistic complexity. The artist's versatility even extends to theatrical collaborations, such as playing the role of Luther on the 2024 concept album Warriors by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis. The artist's professional name itself is a tribute to the Deftones track 'Kimdracula' from their album Saturday Night Wrist. Additionally, Kim Dracula has shared in interviews that they live with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
