How a Myspace cover of Lady Gaga helped launch a metalcore powerhouse
In short: In 2009, a group of musicians from Ohio and New Zealand were just beginning to find their sound. After reaching one million Myspace plays in only two months, a single cover song would change their trajectory forever, leading to a major record deal and a decade of touring.
Formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio, Of Mice & Men began when Austin Carlile, formerly of Attack Attack!, and bassist Jaxin Hall searched for members for approximately one month. The lineup eventually solidified with drummer Valentino Arteaga, guitarist Phil Manansala, and Shayley Bourget, who replaced Jon Kintz after the latter was cut from the group for reportedly 'partying too much.'
The band's rise was accelerated by their digital presence. After their Myspace profile amassed 1,000,000 plays within just two months of launching, they uploaded a cover of Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face.' This demo, mastered by Tom Denney of A Day to Remember, caught the attention of Rise Records, who signed the band following their session at Foundation Studios in July 2009.
The band's evolution has been marked by significant lineup shifts and stylistic changes. Their early work was defined by metalcore and post-hardcore, but later albums like 'Defy' and 'Echo' introduced melodic elements, nu metal, and alternative metal. Over the years, they have seen the departure of several members, including Carlile in December 2016 due to a long-term health condition, and the eventual arrival of bassist and lead vocalist Aaron Pauley, who joined the lineup in 2012.
Since their debut, the group has released nine studio albums, ranging from their 2010 self-titled debut to 2025's 'Another Miracle.' They have become a staple of the international festival circuit, performing at the Vans Warped Tour multiple times, including in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2025.
