How a small Tokyo animation studio became a powerhouse of modern Japanese storytelling
In short: Founded in 2008 by industry veterans from Production I.G and Bones, Kinema Citrus has quietly ascended to the forefront of anime production. Based in Suginami, Tokyo, the studio has built a reputation for high-quality series, transforming from a boutique outfit into a major player backed by industry giants.
Kinema Citrus was established on March 3, 2008, by a group of creators who departed from the established studios Production I.G and Bones. Under the leadership of business directors Muneki Ogasawara, Yuichiro Matsuka, and Masaki Tachibana, the studio quickly began carving out a distinct identity within the competitive Japanese animation landscape. Their early portfolio demonstrated a capacity for diverse storytelling, starting with the 2009 co-production Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 alongside Bones, followed by the three-episode OVA series .hack//Quantum.
The studio's output gained significant momentum throughout the 2010s. In 2014, they produced both Black Bullet and Barakamon, projects that helped cement their standing among fans. However, it was their 2017 work on Made in Abyss and the 2019 release of The Rising of the Shield Hero that brought them widespread international recognition. These titles showcased the studio's ability to handle complex world-building and character-driven narratives, which are hallmarks of their current production style.
The studio's trajectory shifted significantly on December 12, 2019, when Kadokawa and Bushiroad each acquired a 31.8% stake in the company. This move was not an isolated event but the culmination of a strategic partnership formed earlier that same year. By aligning with these major media conglomerates, Kinema Citrus secured the resources necessary to scale their operations. This capital infusion was explicitly intended to support the collaborative creation of new anime projects, ensuring that the studio remains a vital contributor to the global anime market while maintaining the creative vision established by its founders over a decade prior.
