From jazz alto saxophonist to the face of British detective drama
In short: Before he was a mainstay of British television, Jack Shepherd was a talented musician playing jazz. His journey from the Newcastle music scene to winning prestigious theatre awards and starring in iconic detective series reveals a life of profound artistic versatility.
Jack Shepherd’s artistic foundations were as much musical as they were theatrical. During his studies in Newcastle, he played alto saxophone in a jazz ensemble alongside Jon Lord, who would later find fame with Deep Purple and Whitesnake. Lord even recalled Shepherd as one of the finest alto players he knew, noting how the musician introduced him to the complex works of Charles Mingus.
His transition to the stage saw him become a significant figure in both London and regional theatre. After working at the Royal Court Theatre in the late 1960s, Shepherd became a founding member of the democratically run Actors' Company in 1972, alongside luminaries like Ian McKellen. His stage career reached a high point in 1983 when he won a Society of London Theatre Award for his performance as Richard Roma in the original production of Glengary Glen Ross.
While widely recognised by television audiences for his role as Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe between 1993 and 1998, Shepherd was also a prolific playwright and director. He penned works such as the 1989 play In Lambeth, which explored the lives of William Blake and Thomas Paine, and directed the inaugural public production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona at Shakespeare's Globe in 1996. His body of work spanned decades, encompassing everything from political dramas to historical epics like Holding Fire!, which was staged at the Globe in 2007.
Shepherd passed away in November 2025 at the age of 85. Throughout his life, he remained a vital force in the British arts, moving seamlessly between the worlds of jazz, classical theatre, and popular television.
