How a Victorian stockbroker became the world's most influential advocate for Jewish rights
In short: Born in Italy and raised in London, Moses Montefiore retired from the stock exchange at forty to dedicate his life to philanthropy. From securing the release of falsely accused prisoners in Damascus to lobbying tsars and sultans, he spent decades traveling the globe to defend oppressed Jewish communities.
Moses Montefiore was born in Livorno, Italy, in 1784, but moved to England as an infant. After a successful career in the London stock exchange, he retired in 1824, having helped establish major institutions like the Alliance Assurance Company and the Imperial Continental Gas Association. His early life was marked by business innovation, including a partnership with his brother-in-law, Nathan Mayer Rothschild, and a role in the 1835 government loan that facilitated the abolition of slavery across the British Empire.
A transformative 1827 pilgrimage to the Holy Land shifted his focus toward strict religious observance and international activism. As an Orthodox Sephardic Jew, he became a tireless diplomat for his co-religionists. In 1840, he leveraged his friendship with the Egyptian ruler Muḥammad ʿAlī Pasha to secure the release of Jews in Damascus who had been falsely accused of ritual crimes. He also successfully lobbied the Turkish sultan for expanded rights for Jewish subjects and convinced Tsar Nicholas I to rescind a restrictive 1844 decree that forced Jews to leave Russia's western frontier.
Montefiore’s influence extended deep into the nineteenth century. He was knighted in 1837 and served as sheriff of London, becoming the second Jewish person to hold that office. Throughout his life, he made seven journeys to Palestine, funding hospitals and charitable institutions. Despite his global impact, he died without issue in 1885 at his estate, East Cliff Lodge in Ramsgate, leading to the extinction of his baronetcy. His legacy remains that of a man who used his personal fortune and political connections to challenge systemic persecution on an international scale.
