In short: Before they were heavy metal icons, Motörhead was a London band with a shelved debut and a label deal born from a favor. From 1975 beginnings to selling over 2 thick decades of music, discover the shifting lineups and chart peaks of Lemmy's legendary career.

The story of Motörhead began in 1975 when bassist and vocalist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister left Hawkwind to form a new group in London. The initial lineup included guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox, though Fox was quickly replaced by Phil "Philthy" Animal Taylor. While the band's debut, On Parole, was recorded early on, it was shelved by United Artists and not released until 1979. Interestingly, the band's first released album was actually the self-titled Motörhead, issued in 1977 via Chiswick Records as a personal favor to Lemmy.

The band's commercial peak arrived through a series of high-charting releases on Bronze Records. Following the success of Overkill and Bomber in 1979, the band reached the UK top 10 with Ace of Spades and Iron Fist. Their first UK number one was not a studio album, but the 1981 live record No Sleep 'til Hammersmith. This era also saw the band experiment with collaborations, such as the Headgirl EP with Girlschool, which reached number 5 in the UK.

The band's history is defined by a revolving door of musicians. After the departure of "Fast" Eddie Clarke in 1982, the group saw members like Brian Robertson, Phil Campbell, and Mikkey Dee pass through the ranks. Despite periods of chart decline—including a stretch where albums like Bastards and Sacrifice failed to chart—the band maintained a massive global presence. By 2025, Motörhead's total worldwide album sales were estimated to have exceeded 25 million.
