The versatile character actor who mastered the American Western and science fiction
In short: From the sunglasses-wearing villain in Cool Hand Luke to a trusted advisor in Dallas, Morgan Woodward was a ubiquitous presence on screen. With over 250 appearances, he navigated everything from the lawless frontier to the far reaches of Star Trek, leaving an indelible mark on television history.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1925, Morgan Woodward’s life was as varied as his filmography. Prior to his time in acting, he was part of the U.S. Army Air Corps throughout WWII. He rejoined the military's Air Transport Service during the Korean War. His academic background was equally diverse, holding a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Finance from North Texas Agriculture College and attending law school at the University of Texas at Austin.
Woodward became a staple of the Western genre, appearing in iconic series such as Gunsmoke, Rawhide, and Bonanza. His versatility was particularly evident in Gunsmoke, where he played 16 different characters across 19 episodes—the most appearances by any actor on the show. He also held long-running roles, such as 'Shotgun' Gibbs in The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp from 1958 to 1961, and Marvin 'Punk' Anderson in the soap opera Dallas between 1980 and 1987.
His range extended beyond the frontier into science fiction and cinema. He famously portrayed the 'man with no eyes,' Boss Godfrey, in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke. In the original Star Trek series, he played two distinct roles: Captain Ron Tracey and Dr. Simon van Gelder. As deputy director of a psychiatric unit for criminals, Woodward found the position more draining than any other work.
Throughout his career, Woodward received significant recognition for his contributions to the Western genre, including the Golden Lariat Award in 1988 and induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers in 2009. He passed away in February 2019 at the age of 93.
