How a prison reading and a Bowie intervention saved a rock band
In short: Before they were glam rock icons, Mott the Hoople were a struggling group on the brink of collapse. From performing in Italian nightclubs to nearly disbanding after a depressing Swiss concert, their survival depended on a novelist's title and a legendary intervention by David Bowie.
Formed in 1966 in Hereford as the Doc Thomas Group, the band's early years were marked by instability and obscurity. After touring Italy and releasing an eponymous album in 1967, the group cycled through various names in the UK, including the Shakedown Sound and Silence. Their path to fame was famously redirected by Guy Stevens of Island Records, who, while in prison for a drug offence, drew the band's name from the Willard Manus novel *Mott the Hoople*.
The band's commercial trajectory was famously rescued by David Bowie. On the verge of breaking up following a dismal performance in a Swiss gas holder, the group was encouraged to stay together by Bowie. He not only provided the songwriting for their signature hit, "All the Young Dudes," but also produced the eponymous album. This era brought significant success, including the Top 10 album *Mott* and the hit "Roll Away the Stone," which reached No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart in late 1973.
However, the band's stability was often fleeting. The departure of lead singer Ian Hunter in 1974 led to a decline in commercial fortunes, and the group eventually transitioned into the abbreviated 'Mott' before splitting in 1980. Despite the loss of founding members like Dale "Buffin" Griffin and Pete Overend Watts, the band's legacy endured through several high-profile reunions in 2009, 2013, 2018, and 2019, maintaining a cult following that spanned decades.
