In short: Born Ashwathy Kurup, the actress known as Parvathy dominated Malayalam cinema in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Yet, at the peak of her career, she made a conscious choice to step away from the spotlight. Her story reveals the complex intersection of personal values, family life, and professional sacrifice.

Born in 1970 in Thiruvalla to an affluent family, Ashwathy Kurup entered the film industry at age 16. After an initial project directed by Lenin Rajendran was shelved, she made her debut in the 1986 film Vivahithare Ithile, directed by Balachandra Menon. Her rise was rapid, establishing her as a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema through a string of critically and commercially successful films, including 1987's Thoovanathumbikal and 1989's Kireedam.

In 1988, while filming Aparan at Udaya Studio in Alappuzha, she met her future husband, the actor Jayaram. The two eventually married on 7 September 1992 at the Town Hall in Ernakulam. Following the wedding, Parvathy made the definitive decision to retire from acting. She has since expressed that she holds no regrets regarding this transition, viewing it as a necessary trade-off to ensure the proper upbringing of their two children, Kalidas and Malavika.

Parvathy's perspective on this life change was rooted in a belief that one spouse must prioritize the family unit to maintain stability. She questioned the necessity of dual incomes when a husband's earnings are sufficient, framing her departure from the screen as a deliberate choice rather than an external imposition. Today, she resides in Valasaravakkam, Tamil Nadu, having successfully transitioned from a celebrated screen presence to a private family life, while her son Kalidas has continued the family's cinematic legacy, notably winning a National Film Award for Best Child Artist in 2003.
