How a sound engineering student became a global Regency icon
In short: Before he was the captivating Duke of Hastings, Regé-Jean Page was studying sound engineering and performing in a musical duo. His journey from London and Harare to the heights of Netflix stardom is a masterclass in navigating the shifting tides of the entertainment industry.
Regé-Jean Page’s path to stardom was far from linear. Born in London to an English preacher and a Zimbabwean nurse, he spent much of his childhood in Harare. Before finding his footing in drama, he studied sound engineering at Northern Technical College and even performed as part of a musical duo called Tunya alongside his brother, Tose.
His acting career began as early as 2001 with a role in the series Gimme 6, followed by years of steady work in British television and theatre. He appeared in productions such as Waterloo Road and The Merchant of Venice, and later made his American debut in the 2016 History Channel miniseries Roots. By 2017, he had secured a supporting role in the Shondaland legal drama For the People.
The definitive turning point arrived in December 2020 with the release of Netflix's Bridgerton. As a lead in the first season, Page achieved massive critical acclaim, earning an NAACP Image Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination. Interestingly, his departure from the series after the first season was not due to conflict, but a contractual choice; he had signed a one-series deal and sought to explore new creative horizons.
Since his breakthrough, Page has transitioned into major film roles, including the action-heavy The Gray Man and the fantasy film Ducheness & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. While some critics have been mixed on his foray into villainy, his presence remains a fixture in high-profile projects, ranging from fashion campaigns for Armani Code to upcoming thrillers like Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag.
