From decorated combat pilot to Academy Award nominee: the storied life of Richard Farnsworth
In short: Before he became a fixture of American Western cinema, Richard Farnsworth was a decorated war hero. His journey from the cockpit of a B-24 bomber to the heights of Hollywood prestige is a remarkable tale of grit, spanning decades of uncredited stunts and cinematic mastery.
Born in Fairfield, Washington, on September 1, 1920, Richard Farnsworth’s early life was defined by service and bravery. During World War II, he served as a First Lieutenant and pilot in the 344th Bombardment Group of the United States Air Force. His courage in combat earned him the Silver Star, a prestigious medal for gallantry.
Farnsworth’s cinematic career began far from the spotlight, often working in uncredited roles in legendary films such as Gone with the Wind (1939), Red River (1948), and The Ten Commandments (1956). He gradually transitioned from a stuntman into a recognizable character actor, frequently appearing in Westerns. His breakthrough came in 1982 with his performance as the stagecoach robber Bill Miner in the Canadian film The Grey Fox, a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
The latter part of his career was marked by profound critical acclaim. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1978 for Comes a Horseman and, in 2000, became the second-oldest nominee for Best Actor for his role as Alvin Straight in David Lynch’s The Straight Story. His versatility allowed him to move between genres, playing characters ranging from a suspicious sheriff in Stephen King's Misery (1990) to a wise cowboy in Sylvester (1985).
Farnsworth’s life ended with the same stark intensity seen in his roles. While living on a ranch in Lincoln, New Mexico, he died on October 6, 2000, following a battle with terminal cancer. His legacy remains cemented in film history, evidenced by his 1992 induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers in 1997.
