The physician who became a whistleblower for the intelligence community
In short: Richard Fuisz is a man of many lives: a physician, an inventor with over 200 patents, and a businessman whose ventures touched the Soviet Union and the Middle East. His life has been defined by high-stakes allegations involving the CIA, arms smuggling, and state secrets.
A physician and entrepreneur, Richard Fuisz holds more than 200 patents in fields ranging from cryptography to drug delivery. His career has been marked by significant legal and political entanglements. In the 1970s, he co-founded Medcom, Inc., which became a leading supplier of medical training to Middle Eastern militaries. Following Baxter International's 1982 acquisition of Medcom for $52 million, Fuisz's dismissal sparked a lawsuit that caused the initial criminal prosecution of a firm for breaching U.S. laws. anti-boycott laws.
Fuisz's involvement in international affairs extended into the Soviet Union, where he operated businesses like Leopoldina Import-Export Inc. and Folkon, Ltd. He claimed his business activities helped supply computers to the KGB and worked with a young Mikhail Khodorkovsky. He also attempted to establish a modeling agency in 1988 to bring Soviet models to American markets, a venture that involved smuggling the first Miss USSR, Yulia Sukhanova, out of the country.
Perhaps his most controversial chapter involved allegations regarding the Iraqi military. In 1992, reports suggested that Fuisz had witnessed the manufacturing of Scud missile launchers disguised as civilian vehicles at a plant in Motherwell, Scotland. While the U.S. government invoked the state secrets privilege to prevent Fuisz from testifying—effectively gagging him—and major news outlets later retracted claims of Terex's involvement, a 2003 dossier suggested that various American firms did indeed supply weapons technology to Iraq during the 1990s.
