How a pizza delivery turned into a professional mixed martial arts career
In short: At age 21, Rob Font was delivering pizzas when a chance encounter in a garage changed his life. Watching fighters train sparked an interest that led him from amateur bouts in New England to the highest levels of the UFC bantamweight division.
Born in Massachusetts to parents serving in the army, Font's childhood involved frequent international moves. His professional journey began in earnest after he witnessed a training session while making a food delivery. This sparked a rapid ascent: he competed as an amateur in 2009, building a 3–1 record before making his professional debut in December 2011. His early training was facilitated by a free week offered at a local gym. This period of development followed his initial amateur experience in Central Massachusetts.
After a 10–1 start in regional promotions, he signed with the UFC in the spring of 2014. His debut against George Roop resulted in a first-round knockout and a Performance of the Night bonus. Since then, Font has become a staple of the bantamweight division, participating in high-intensity bouts that have earned him multiple Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night awards.
Font's career is defined by high-volume striking and durability. In a 2022 bout against Marlon Vera, he set bantamweight records for both significant and total strikes landed. While he has faced significant setbacks, including losses to former champions like José Aldo, his longevity is notable. He currently holds the third-most bouts in UFC bantamweight history with 19 appearances, and ranks fifth for total fight time in the division with 3:58:06. His striking prowess is further evidenced by his ranking as the fourth most frequent lander of significant strikes in the division. Additionally, he shares the record for the most finishes in bantamweight history with seven victories.
