From Oban shinty player to PGA Tour winner: The rise of Robert MacIntyre
In short: Robert MacIntyre has rapidly evolved from a promising Scottish amateur into a formidable force on the global stage. A former shinty player from Oban, he has secured multiple European Tour titles and historic PGA Tour victories, proving his mettle in high-pressure Ryder Cup environments and major championships alike.
Born in 1996, Robert MacIntyre’s path to professional golf began with a decorated amateur career, including victories at the 2013 Scottish Youths Championship and the 2015 Scottish Amateur. After attending McNeese State University, he turned professional in 2017. His transition to the elite level was marked by a steady climb through the Challenge Tour, culminating in a 2019 season where he earned the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award on the European Tour.
MacIntyre’s professional breakthrough accelerated in the 2020s. He secured his first European Tour title at the 2020 Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown and added a second at the 2022 Italian Open. His international profile surged in 2023 when he played a pivotal role in the European team’s Ryder Cup victory, notably defeating Wyndham Clark in his Sunday singles match. By the end of that season, his performance on the Race to Dubai rankings earned him a coveted PGA Tour card for 2024.
The 2024 season proved historic for the Scotsman. He claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the RBC Canadian Open, with his father, Dougie, serving as his caddie. Shortly after, he won the Genesis Scottish Open, becoming the second Scot to win twice in a single PGA Tour season, a feat last achieved by Sandy Lyle in 1988. His momentum continued into 2025, where he secured a second Ryder Cup win and a fourth European Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, cementing his status as a leading figure in modern golf.
