How a scandal forced a reality show to rewrite its history
In short: When a contestant's private misconduct surfaced, it didn't just end their competition; it fundamentally altered the show's narrative. From edited broadcasts to charitable donations, the fallout of one individual's actions forced a massive structural shift in how the season was presented to the public.
In February 2020, 13 queens vied for 'America's Next Drag Superstar' during the 12th series of RuPaul's Drag Race. Nevertheless, a major scandal occurred following accusations of improper behaviour involving Sherry Pie (Joey Gugliemelli). Multiple individuals, including actor Ben Shimkus and several others, came forward alleging that Gugliemelli used a fake identity to coerce them into filming sexually suggestive and provocative videos under the guise of professional auditions. In response to these revelations, VH1 disqualified Gugliemelli from the competition on March 6, 2020. The fallout was so severe that the production mostly edited her out of the American broadcast, though some overseas screenings retained the original footage.
Because she was originally one of the Top 4, her removal meant she was technically placed in 4th place, making Season 12 the first time since Season 8 that the show featured a top 3 ranking. The production also took tangible steps to address the harm caused. World of Wonder, the production house, gave $5,000 to The Trevor Project for each instance where Sherry Pie earned a $5,000 cash tip by winning a challenge. Despite these controversies, the season remained a critical success, winning the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program and several other awards for costumes, editing, and hosting.
The season's legacy is defined by this tension between high-glamour success and the heavy reality of its production hurdles. It serves as a case study in how modern media handles the intersection of reality television, personal accountability, and the necessity of protecting the community it represents.
