From border settlement to Malaysia's global gateway
In short: Once a small border town, the Sepang District is rapidly transforming into a high-tech powerhouse. Home to Malaysia's primary aviation hub and a massive digital trade zone, this corner of Selangor is preparing for a massive population surge and a transition to full city council status.
The Sepang District, located at the southernmost tip of Selangor, has a relatively recent administrative history. Formally constituted on 1 January 1975, it was created by repartitioning sections of the Kuala Langat and Hulu Langat districts. While the historic town of Sepang once served as a border settlement, the administrative capital has moved to the planned town of Salak Tinggi. The district's geography is defined by its borders with Kuala Langat, Petaling, and Hulu Langat, as well as the state of Negeri Sembilan. It even encompasses the entirety of the federal administrative centre, Putrajably.
Today, the district functions as Malaysia's primary aviation and logistics nucleus. It hosts Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which serves as the corporate headquarters for major players including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. Apart from aerospace, the area incorporates advanced tech hubs such as Cyberjaya—central to the MSC Malaysia scheme—and the Alibaba Group-partnered eWTP Digital Free Trade Zone. Beyond aviation, the district's landscape includes the creative facilities of Animonsta Studios in Cyber 8. The area also features the coastal attractions of Bagan Lalang Beach and Avani Sepang Gold Coast.
The region is currently undergoing significant structural evolution. Under the 2035 Local Plan, the Sepang Municipal Council aims to transition into a full city council (Majlis Bandaraya Sepang). The IDRISS programme provides backing for this expansion. Urban planners are preparing for a substantial demographic shift: while the 2023 population was estimated at 338,600, projections suggest the district could reach 595,801 residents by 2035, necessitating the construction of approximately 211,938 housing units. The 2035 land use zoning reveals a diverse landscape, with roughly 20% dedicated to housing and nearly 20% for transport corridors. Agriculture and water bodies also represent significant portions of the 61,900-hectare area.
