How a bicycle accident and global unrest reshaped U2's latest record
In short: U2’s Songs of Experience wasn't just another album; it was a project forged in the crucible of physical trauma and geopolitical shift. From a life-altering crash to open-heart surgery, the band navigated personal mortality while recalibrating their artistic tone for a changing world.
The creation of Songs of Experience began as an extension of U2's 2014 record, Songs of Innocence. While the previous album explored the band's youth in Ireland during the 1970s, this companion piece was conceived as a collection of letters from lead vocalist Bono to people and places close to his heart. The process began in earnest during the 2015 Innocence + Experience Tour, where members collaborated with producers like Andy Barlow and Jolyon Thomas in small increments—often in dressing rooms or hotel suites—to build the album's "shape and feel" while on the road.
The project faced significant pivots due to external shocks. U2 suspended work on the project to evaluate its mood after the 2016 US presidential election and UK's Brexit referendum signaled a move toward conservative global politics. Simultaneously, Bono underwent a personal transformation following a serious bicycle accident in November 2014 that left him with multiple fractures and uncertainty about his ability to play guitar. He later underwent open-heart surgery in December 2016, leading him to rewrite lyrics to reflect both the political climate and his "brush with mortality."
The final production was a feat of endurance. Producer Andy Barlow spent two years working with the band across ten countries, noting that only about 10 percent of the work occurred in actual studios. The group eventually moved from makeshift setups—like a Victorian mansion in Killiney outfitted as a studio—to high-level sessions in Los Angeles. The United States chart saw U2 reach number one with this debut, becoming the initial act to lead the nation's rankings for four straight decades despite varied critical feedback regarding familiar themes.
Thematically, the record serves as a bridge between the "innocence" of youth and the "experience" of adulthood. This narrative was physically manifested on their 2015 tour through a unique stage structure featuring a 96-foot double-sided video screen and an oval sound array designed to distribute acoustics evenly across arena floors.
