In short: Tandav explores the ruthless pursuit of power within India's political landscape, pitting a charismatic party leader against an idealistic student activist. Created by Ali Abbas Zafar, this Amazon Prime series delves into the manipulation, greed, and violence that define the struggle for the Prime Minister's office in contemporary India.

The series centers on Samar Pratap Singh, played by Saif Ali Khan, a leader within the Janata Lok Dal who believes he is destined for the premiership. His path is blocked by his father, the incumbent Prime Minister Devki Nandan Singh, and rival party figures like Anuradha Kishore, portrayed by Dimple Kapadia. The narrative expands to include Shiva Shekhar, a campus activist whose sudden rise to prominence brings him into direct conflict with the established political elite. This collision of student idealism and seasoned political pragmatism serves as the core mechanism of the show's plot.

Filming for the eight-episode series began in October 2019, utilizing the Pataudi Palace in Haryana as a primary location. The production, which also shot scenes at the Imperial Hotel in Delhi, was largely completed before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in March 2020. Director Ali Abbas Zafar collaborated with writer Gaurav Solanki to craft a story that draws parallels to real-world institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University. The series features an ensemble cast of 11 to 12 primary characters and incorporates an adapted version of the song Dhakka Laga Bukka, originally from the 2004 film Yuva.

Upon its release on January 15, 2021, the show faced significant controversy. Critics and political figures accused the production of mocking Hindu deities and hurting religious sentiments, leading to the filing of multiple First Information Reports across states including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. In response to pressure from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Zafar issued an unconditional apology and committed to modifying specific portions of the series. Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers comparing it to a soap opera or a derivative take on political drama, while others noted its engaging, albeit non-stimulating, nature.
