The Red Tornado: A legacy reborn through military discipline and survival
In short: Born from the chaos of 1954, Thể Công has survived wars, dissolutions, and brand disputes. From its origins as an army sports team to its modern incarnation as Thể Công–Viettel FC, the club remains a titan of Vietnamese football, defined by a fierce rivalry and a relentless drive to reclaim its identity.
The club's roots trace back to 23 September 1954, when General Nguyễn Chí Thanh established the Military Sports Unit (Thể Công). Originally a small cadre of 23 people from the Army Officer College No1, the group was divided into football, basketball, and volleyball teams. One notable member was Lý Đức Kim, a versatile athlete who served as a player, nurse, and logistics support.
Throughout the 20th century, Thể Công became a dominant force, winning nine North Vietnam national titles before reunification and securing six V.League 1 titles. Their dominance was so pronounced that they were a founding member of the highest Vietnamese league system in the mid-1950s. This era saw the rise of legendary players like Nguyễn Văn Bưởi, the club's first captain, and Tí Bồ, who became the oldest Vietnamese national player ever at age 38.
The club's history is marked by significant upheaval. In 1965, American bombings forced the unit to operate under the Army Officers' School for five years. Later, in 2009, the Ministry of Defence transferred management from the General Political Department to the Viettel Group, leading to a period of identity shifts and even the sale of their league slot. After a period in the lower divisions, the club returned to the top tier, eventually winning the V.League 1 title in 2020.
Today, the club competes in V.League 1 as Thể Công–Viettel FC. While they have faced intense competition from rivals like Hà Nội FC, their historical significance remains tied to their military origins and their ability to rebuild from the Third Division to the pinnacle of Vietnamese football.
